A little bit of history
Royal Tunbridge Wells has attracted well-heeled visitors for over 400 years, ever since a young nobleman chanced upon the Chalybeate Spring in 1606. In Georgian times Tunbridge Wells was a spa resort to rival Brighton and Bath, popular with gentry and royalty alike. In the early 1800s rich businessmen and merchants began not only to holiday in Tunbridge Wells, but also to make their homes here, leading to the building of many large villas and family homes to the north of the spa by the architect Decimus Burton.

Need to know
In 1909 King Edward VII officially acknowledged the town's popularity with the royals, including his mum Queen Victoria, by granting our town the 'Royal' prefix.

Shopping
At the top of the town you'll find the Royal Victoria Place Shopping Centre with many well-known shops and brands including Marks & Spencer, Next, WH Smith, Gap, Topshop and many more as well as Fenwick's Department Store. Nearby, Camden Road offers a diverse range of independent shops. Moving towards the south of the town centre and down Mount Pleasant you'll discover yet more popular high street names including Fat Face, Bang & Olufsen, Toni & Guy, Phase Eight, East & India Jane. Continuing further south to the high street you'll find individual boutique clothes and furniture shops. At the most southern end of the town, there is the Pantiles which has unique specialist and antique shops as well as a range of bars and restaurants and regular weekend markets. In fact, if markets are your thing, you'll be spoilt for choice with Tunbridge Wells Farmers Market at the top of town and the Pantiles Food Market at the bottom. The surrounding area also boasts numerous farm shops offering locally produced food, notably Eridge Park, Cherry Gardens Organic Produce and Perryhill Orchards. Wine lovers are well catered for with Noble Wines, the Secret Cellar, Oddbins and Majestic Wines. While DIY enthusiasts will find everything they need at Wickes, Homebase, B&Q, as well as smaller independent specialists. The town of Tunbridge Wells has a range of newsagents and most of the surrounding villages also offer popular local shops.
