Description

'The White House' is an enchanting home of character rarely found, but often sought within the seaside village of Ferring. Homes of this nature seldom come to market. We are incredibly excited to offer the opportunity to acquire such a unique home where cool laid back interiors blend effortlessly with beach-inspired gardens moments from the sea.

Built for the actor Raymond Massey of Doctor Kildare fame 'Milbury House' followed the design of a home he had seen at the Ideal Home Exhibition.

The house was subsequently sold to ‘Jimmy’ Thomas, a minister in Ramsay MacDonald’s government. Jimmy was friends with the then Prince of Wales who later became Edward VIII before abdicating to marry Wallis Simpson. Before Mrs Simpson, Edward had a lengthy affair with another married woman, Freda Dudley Ward, who he often brought to Milbury House due to its private location. Locals spoke of ‘black limousines arriving after dark’.

The house was split in half in the 1960s, the western half retaining the title of Milbury House and the eastern half became the White House both with separate access and private driveways.

The current owners have enjoyed the property for many years creating a wonderful home with plenty of room for the family and the ability to add with potential for an annexe. The house is set along a private drive from Herm Road beyond which the gardens are open to the south side with parking for multiple vehicles to the north plus a large double garage and workshop. Internally our floorplan shows the layout and room sizes. Of note is the sense of serenity afforded by the bright spacious interiors where the vendors have chosen a crisp white finish with neutral fittings throughout that adds to the charm and character of the house and fits its setting beautifully. The kitchen diner is the hub of the home with a range of units by Harvey Jones which has been magazine featured in 'Beautiful Homes' The addition of bi-fold doors and roof lantern allow natural light to flood the space and give a southernly view over the gardens. The study is a lovely place to work from with glazed doors to the terrace which is also accessible from the superb reception room with its tall ceiling and period fireplace adding a sense of grandeur. From here you have a further reception currently utilised as a home gym and a downstairs guest bedroom with en-suite.

To the upper floor are three very good sized bedrooms. The master boasts an en-suite shower room and a super terrace with south facing aspect giving a distant sea view. The third bedroom was formally two separate rooms however they have been opened to provide a spacious double with en-suite potential or if required could easily become two double again with the addition of a stud wall. The family bathroom is beautifully appointed with a modern suite including a stunning freestanding bath, countertop mounted sink, w.c, walk-in shower and w.c.

Externally the gardens are a delight with a large lawn interspersed with established planting affording a good degree of privacy and interesting spaces in which to unwind. A raised terrace spans the rear of the house giving space in which to enjoy al-fresco dining and stunning sunsets.

In summary, this wonderful home is a must-see for those looking for a change of pace with a seaside vibe and relaxed environment yet still accessible to Brighton, Chichester and London with excellent road and rail links. Those looking to work from home will undoubtedly enjoy the tranquil surrounds with the ability to smell the sea and visit the beach within moments of leaving the office!
